The Space Between Us | Movie Review| Wedding Photographers Cape Town
I recently watched this heart felt movie and it inspired me so much that I decided to write a narrowed down version of the storyline, what it taught me and how I relate to it as a photographer.
In this interplanetary adventure, 6 dynamic astronauts go to live on Mars. Shortly after arriving to help colonize Mars, an astronaut dies while giving birth to the first human born in space. Gardner Elliot, a highly intelligent and inquisitive 16 year old boy has only met 14 people (scientists) in his lifetime. While in search of his father, Gardner begins an online friendship with smart girl named Tulsa.
When Gardner finally gets the opportunity to go to earth, he is extremely eager to explore and experience all the wonders he has been reading about on Mars. Sadly, soon after his adventure begins scientists discover that Gardner’s organs can’t withstand Earth’s Atmosphere.
Soon after his arrival he joins Tulsa on a race against time to find his father and where he belongs in this universe. At first, Tulsa finds it difficult to trust and understand who Gardner is. “Just because something sounds crazy, it doesn’t mean it isn’t true.”- Gardner Elliot
The chemistry and relationship between Gardner and Tulsa were one of the main highlights for me. Tulsa is highly intelligent and mature for her age. However, her character comes across as very closed minded when it comes to trusting people. She has faced many battles in life which has made her stronger, but at the same time extremely negative and hesitant towards society.
Lets face it, we all want to deeply connect with someone, no matter where we are or what our story is. If it is meant to be, God will lead the way.
From a personal point of view, I love how fearless Gardner is and I admire the fact that his disease didn’t keep him from living life to its fullest. The character he plays in the movie and his way of doing things really got me thinking. Everything he could not experience in his 16 years of existence are things we take for granted every day. The places we get to see, the people we get to meet and the things we get to experience. We become so consumed by the negative energy in the world that we tend to forget how special the gift of life is.
After reading this, did you find yourself relating back to instances that may have occurred in your life?
From a photographer’s perspective, the reason for this review from a personal and business point of view has to do with the way you review life. You might be wondering why I say personal and business. Well, look at it this way, from a personal perspective, your personality and character define who you are. From a business perspective, who you are, is evident in the work that you produce.
For example, first and foremost, the Lord is my foundation in life. Without Him I would not be here today. I also love travelling, meeting new people and I believe in living a healthy and active lifestyle. I am extremely passionate about what I do and I try and showcase that in the best way possible through the stories I tell and the people I capture. There is nothing more rewarding than a client telling me “Riaan, I love you work, it is so artistic and unique. You definitely have a passion for this.”
If you are struggling to come to terms with who you are and finding it difficult to find your purpose in life, I encourage you to see this movie. I can honestly say, that this is the stepping stone into the right direction and maybe, just maybe it will change your outlook on life itself.
